Considered her magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged tells the story of an alternate future in America where government interference in the economy has stifled the country's economic prowess and intellectual advancement. You can find a thorough summary of the novel here.
The Fountainhead tells the story of Howard Roark, a brilliant architect who refuses to bow to convention in order to please the mainstream. Because of this, the intellectually bankrupt collectivists attempt to destroy Roark by preventing him from doing what he's best at. You can find a detailed summary here.
Anthem is Rand's simplest work, an early distillation of her philosophy that would later be expanded on in The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. It is near and dear to my heart because it was my first exposure to Rand and her visionary ideas. I began teaching the novella ten years ago, knowing hardly anything about it. As I became more familiar with Anthem and Ayn Rand, I felt as though I had found an expression of ideas and values that I had always known were inside me. Maybe the ideas contained within this novella will have the same impact on you. I hope you enjoy it.
A summary of Anthem can be found here. However, I urge you to read the book in class before looking up the basic plot. It spoils the revelation the main character experiences towards the end.
